Jet Engines and Propulsion Systems for Engineers

Thaddeus W. Fowler, “Jet Engines and Propulsion Systems for Engineers”
Human Resource Development Dept. General Electric Aircraft Engines | 1989 | ASIN: B000VW0YKS | 516 pages | PDF | 16 MB
The purpose of this book and the companion course is to present to engineers the know!edge that has been gained about jet engines and propulsion systems over the past half century. The book and the course are not meant to present ideas at the highest quantitative level, but are rather to convey fundamental principles from the experts in one area to engineers in other domains. By doing this each call understand to some degree the problems encountered and approaches taken across the entire propulsion system.
An increased level of insight and cooperation might corne about toward developing even more refined engines and systems.

Spaceplanes: From Airport to Spaceport

Matthew A. Bentley, “Spaceplanes: From Airport to Spaceport”
Springer | 2008 | ISBN: 0387765093 | 238 pages | PDF | 4,7 MB
Spaceplanes From Airport to Spaceport presents a vision of the near future in which space vehicles can take off from an international airport, refuel in space, and fly regularly between the Earth and the Moon. The book is built on the solid engineering foundation prepared by David Ashford in his book Spaceflight Revolution, but develops the argument.
This is a coherent, lucid, and optimistic picture of the future – aimed directly at the reader as a future space passenger – which explains why the Space Tourist market could easily become the single most important factor in the mid-term future development of space transportation. In a few years it will be possible to board a spaceplane and fly into Earth orbit, and perhaps visit a space station. Later development could include refuelling in orbit to take a tour of cislunar space.
As the latest news has shown, the successful flight of SpaceShipOne and the imminent inauguration of Virgin Galactic’s sub-orbital rides from the New Mexico desert have already begun this process.
This book explains the technical details of precisely how all this can be accomplished within the next few decades.

Mechanical Evaluation Strategies for Plastics Materials

S. Turner, D.R. Moore, “Mechanical Evaluation Strategies for Plastics Materia”
Publisher: Woodhead Publishing Ltd | 2000-07 | ISBN 185573379X | PDF | 200 pages | 1.5 MB
Thermoplastics, being non-linear viscoelastic, impose constraints on testing which are absent in elastic and plastic materials. End products manufactured from them are often anisotropic, complicating the relationships between laboratory test data and service performance. This new book explains recently developed testing strategies for providing service-pertinent data within a limited budget.
It relates the structure of the tests and the functions that they serve to the intrinsic nature of the mechanical properties of thermoplastic materials.

This book presents new and significant research progress on composite materials which are engineered materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties and which remain separate and distinct on a macroscopic level within the finished structure. Fiber Reinforced Polymers or FRPs include Wood comprising (cellulose fibers in a lignin and hemicellulose matrix), Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic or CFRP, Glass-fiber reinforced plastic or GFRP (also GRP).
If classified by matrix then there are Thermoplastic Composites, short fiber thermoplastics, long fiber thermoplastics or long fiber reinforced thermoplastics There are numerous thermoset composites, but advanced systems usually incorporate aramid fibre and carbon fibre in an epoxy resin matrix.
Composites can also utilise metal fibres reinforcing other metals, as in Metal matrix composites or MMC. Ceramic matrix composites include Bone (hydroxyapatite reinforced with collagen fibers), Cermet (ceramic and metal) and Concrete. Organic matrix/ceramic aggregate composites include Asphalt concrete, Mastic asphalt, Mastic roller hybrid, Dental composite, Syntactic foam and Mother of Pearl. Chobham armour is a special composite used in military applications. Engineered wood includes a wide variety of different products such as Plywood, Oriented strand board, Wood plastic composite (recycled wood fiber in polyethylene matrix), Pykrete (sawdust in ice matrix), Plastic-impregnated or laminated paper or textiles, Arborite, Formica (plastic) and Micarta.
Composite materials have gained popularity (despite their generally high cost) in high-performance products such as aerospace components (tails, wings , fuselages, propellors), boat and scull hulls, and racing car bodies. More mundane uses include fishing rods and storage tanks.

Mechanics of Materials: A Modern Integration of Mechanics and Materials in Structural Design
Publisher: Academic Press | Pages: 408 | 2005-03-15 | ISBN 0123838525 | DJVU | 7 MB

This new book is the first to bridge the often disparate bodies of knowledge now known as applied mechanics and materials science. Using a very methodological process to introduce mechanics, materials, and design issues in a manner called “total structural design”, this book seeks a solution in “total design space” Features of the text include:
* A generalized design template for solving structural design problems.

* Every chapter first introduces mechanics concepts through deformation, equilibrium, and energy considerations. Then the constitutive nature of the chapter topic is presented, followed by a link between mechanics and materials concepts. Details of analysis and materials selection are subsequently discussed.
* A concluding example design problem is provided in most chapters, so that students may get a sense of how mechanics and materials come together in the design of a real structure.
* Exercises are provided that are germane to aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering applications, and include both deterministic and design-type problems.
* Accompanying website contains a wealth of information complementary to this text, including a set of virtual labs. Separate site areas are available for the instructor and students.

Rotating machinery (eg pumps, motors, compressors) is normally manufactured to precise measurements but there comes a point when the costs of manufacture mean that further precision is not cost-effective and thus any slight imbalance inherent in the machine will need to be attended to after manufacture. When such machinery is in operation, often at very high speeds of thousands of revs per minute, any imbalance will set up vibration and often noise.
In addition, such imbalance will cause extra wear and loss of efficiency in the machine. The answer is to balance the affected parts of the machine so that it operates smoothly and efficiently.
This book is a practical account of such balancing techniques e.g how to balance a rotor, how to set up and verify performance of a balancing machine, and procedures for on-site balancing. In addition, other common causes of vibration will be covered e.g. misalignment, bad bearings and looseness.
