Have you taken the IELTS Exam more than once?

Have you taken the IELTS Exam more than once?

In this podcast Dominic Cole from the distinguished DCIELTS.com shares his expert advice for IELTS re-takers and great detailed tips for the reading section.

  • What to do if you have taken the IELTS exam more than once.
  • The three skills you need for the Reading.
  • The problem with Reading isn’t TIME.
  • Why looking for key words creates problems.
  • How to identify where the answers are.
  • How to understand the whole text… QUICKLY.
  • How to make more intelligent guesses.
  • How to process and understand the text?
  • Why rhythm can help you.

Dominic recommends taking a step back and focussing on general skills.

Find a teacher who can conduct a needs analysis to identify specific skills you needs.

Study the criteria required for your target band score.

The problem with Reading isn’t TIME. It’s efficiency. Texts are long and complex. They have to be read both quickly and effectively.

You need three skills for the IELTS Reading
1. Scanning – to identify WHERE the answer is.
2. Skimming – reading the whole text to understand quickly.
3. Close Reading -when you identify where the answer GO BACK and read the ENTIRE question again, to be certain to answer the WHOLE question.

Skimming helps in two ways:
1. Helps because you know where to look for the answer.
2. At some stage you maybe guessing, so by reading the whole text you will be able to make more intelligent guessing.

Extremely important. Find out what works for you. Test different methods…

Develop your speed reading skills, especially skimming.

While skimming make notes and underline as you progress. This way you process ad understand the text, make it your own.

If you are uncertain of an answer then place a light question mark or signal so you know too go back to it later.

Don’t get stuck on one question, keep moving, keep a rhythm.

Develop your timing.

By the last set of questions you should be more familiar with the text and should be able to find the answers quicker than at the beginning.

One way to increase reading speed is to listen and read at the same time.

Is an Intensive English Course for You? + How to learn English FAST

Is an Intensive English Course for You? + How to learn English FAST

Meet JoeMcVeigh, not only does he co-author textbooks, he is an English language consultant.

He has over 25 years experience ranging from designing curricula, training trainers, and administering intensive English language programmes.

This podcast will be very helpful if you are considering doing an intensive language course, or you would like to learn English fast.

I asked Joe some of the following questions:

How can a student spend 6 years learning English and finish without being able to speak a word? (Common in some EU and Asian countries).

What kind of programme would you design for an international student who is about to start in higher education? What areas would take precedence?
Could you share your opinion on the use of IEP to prepare for official exams, such as the TOEFL or IELTS?
What would a student be wise looking for when assessing purchasing a course?
Sometimes I tell my students not to do IEPs because of their effectiveness. One student went to Dublin, spent two weeks learning grammar, he was around eight other non-English speakers, he said he tried to socialise with the locals but he couldn’t understand them. My student came back depressed and with €2000 less in his pocket.
Could you share your thoughts on this please.
What is the goal of an IEP and how is it achieved?
Do IEPs decrease the amount of time required to learn a language?
How would a student learn English fast?

Pronunciation is worth more than fluency. IELTS Speaking.

Pronunciation is worth more than fluency. IELTS Speaking.

Meet Esther Bruhl from SpeakmoreClearly.com Esther is a speech therapist and shares some excellent advice for learning how to speak more clearly.

I invited Esther because pronunciation is often overlooked however it is CRITICAL to scoring high.

Imagine, you speak perfect grammar, you have an excellent vocabulary, but the examiner can not understand a word because of your strong accent. Then it’s all worth NOTHING.

In this episode I asked Esther:

What are the fastest ways to improve your pronunciation?

Why is pronunciation important?

Can nerves change your pronunciation?

How do you make your self understood?

How to Describe a Table – Academic Task 1

How to Describe a Table – Academic Task 1

How great would it feel if you could listen to an expert describe step-by-step how to score high when describing a table of figures?

I know, silly question. It would feel great.

Now what if you could download that lesson right now… for free? And see the final Band 9 model answer?

In this episode Tish from YES-IELTS.com is back with more tips and advice regarding a table.

Main points from the interview.

When starting to summarise a table:

  • Check the time frame, what tense will you be using?
  • Make a list of some of the vocabulary you would like to use.

Divide into groups and review the data.

  • Try to divide the table into two significant parts. Look for a way to group the data.
  • Also look for any exceptions, (percentage aged 75+ falls for the first time in 2050).
  • Below the data is divided into two groups of 20 years.
  • Another option could have been: Total Population, Population Aged 75+.

The table used is more simple than an official IELTS exam to clearly show the procedures.

Paragraphs and structure

  • P1 will be the introductory statement, in this example two sentences may be necessary.
  • Use two main paragraphs to describe each group derived from the table.
  • If possible make a comparison or contrast in the paragraphs.
  • For the first paragraph, there is a comparison between two groups within the first group of 20 years.
  • P2 focusses on the next 20 years and acknowledges the exception in the graph.
  • For the summary sentence try to look for something significant, and related to the paragraphs, for example: during the time period the amount of people over 75 doubled.
Click here to see the model answer.

Click here for the notes on the model answer.

Common mistakes made

  • For the summary do not include an opinion or extra information.
  • Including too many figures and not being selective.
  • Not making a plan to organise the essay.

Best preparation

  • Practice practise practise tests.
  • First try the task with no time limit -master the skills, then focus on completing it within 20 minutes.
  • Become accustomed to not using the dictionary.

These must be some of the best kept IELTS speaking secrets

These must be some of the best kept IELTS speaking secrets

Peter Travis from Splendid-Speaking.com, has a podcast dedicated to advanced learners of English students who want to develop their top speaking skills and communication strategies.

In this podcast Peter shares:

-Practical advice for the IELTS Speaking part 2.
-Great tips for learning and employing idiomatic expressions.
-Tips to gain fluency.
-How can an IELTS student structure their talk.
-Keys to using and understanding idiomatic expressions -like the palm of your hand.

Advanced IELTS Speaking

Why a student may have problems speaking fluently
-Students may sacrifice fluency to obtain accuracy and not take risks, however this isn’t a balanced approach.

Best approach:

-Understand that proficiency (advanced ability) consists of both accuracy and fluency.
-Be prepared to separate them, i.e. concentrate on fluency practise for one session, then accuracy in the second session.

Being fluent takes time because it consists of having the knowledge of the language, learnt so well it flows, without thinking (those horrible unwanted pauses).

Tips to gain fluency.

-If you suffer from pauses a little trick is to use fillers: uhmm let me think, that’s a good question.
-Paraphrasing, if you don’t know the word in English just describe it: Lawnmower = something that cuts the grass. This helps you keep speaking without having to worry about finding the correct word.
-Allow yourself to make mistakes.
-Talk to yourself, decide on a specific area e.g. accuracy using the past tense.
-Focus on when to use the pauses correctly: at the end of sentences, at the end of clauses, etc.

How can an IELTS student structure their talk.

-Use the question, use the four parts as prompts, this makes it easy for the examiner to follow.
-If possible use anecdotes, set the scene, where and who you were with, what happened and why it’s significant to your topic.
-Although it’s a semi-formal situation, remember it is spontaneous.
-Consider it as a job interview.

How can a student make their talk more interesting?

-Be prepared to talk about yourself and to share.
-Possibly relate your story to topical events in the news at the time (only if it all connects; your topic, your story and the event).

Keys to using and understanding idiomatic expressions -like the palm of your hand.

-The receptive skill, understanding their meaning, for this you can use a dictionary
-Using them appropriately, not using them just because you know them.
-The best way to understand them is to personalise them, associate someone in your life to the idiomatic phrase, now the phrase has a feeling, this can also be done with phrasal verbs.

Peter’s recordings range from: Using an Anecdote to make a point, Making a Spontaneous talk, and Expressing and Justifying Opinions.

Tish from Yes-IELTS.com, A Tutorial about Pie Charts

Tish from Yes-IELTS.com, A Tutorial about Pie Charts

If you think, “Ben, I know how to describe a pie chart’ consider this:

You may have to describe a big juicy pie chart, or even three, or possibly even with a bar chart…

It doesn’t matter. Each scenario requires the ability to describe one, and if you want to score high in the academic IELTS test, you better know how.

Question is how?

Meet Tish from YES-IELTS.com, in this episode we go through the procedures to describe a pie chart.Tish explains what to expect, what to do, and the things you need to be aware of.

How to describe a pie chart.

-Use a two paragraph structure.
-Try to split the information into two groups.
-Use introductory and summary sentences.
Even if there are three graphs, aim for 2 groups of data because:
1. The question will have asked for a SUMMARY not a DESCRIPTION.
2. 150 words and 20 minutes are too short a time for details.
3. Dividing the information into 2 groups forms the basis for your paragraphs.
Introductory statement should include:
1. What type of graph it is and what it describes.
2. The time frame / data covered.
For the summary sentence:
1. Do not repeat the introduction: Show off your wonderful English!
2. Do report the major trend / a significant change.
Be aware of the tense used.
1. Use the present tense if there is no time frame shown.
2. Check the tense you use corresponds to the time frame.
Use a variety of grammar structures.
1. Include the passive.
TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE;
The number of CDs which were sold increased dramatically.
2. Be aware of the official band descriptors.
Do not write every specific figure, try to identify trends.
1. Include the most relevant figures.
2. Look for the largest portion, the second largest and then the bottom section in the first pie chart.
3. Do the same for the second chart (assuming there are two pie charts).
Be flexible and varied with your vocabulary.
1. Use words like portion, sector, and third, quarter, two-thirds, etc.
2. Be aware of fractions, make sure you know that three-quarters is %75.
Notes for the summary.
1. Use generalizations: A few, the large majority, etc.
2. Do not use them with specific numbers.
The most common mistakes made when describing pie charts:
1. Referring to the graph as something other than a pie chart.
2. Including too many figures or not enough figures.
Tish has an IELTS exam correction service, and a large range of courses related to the IELTS exam, so have a look here.

How he scored 8.5 in the reading!

How he scored 8.5 in the reading!

Originally, reading was not his strong point but eventually he scored 8.5!

What happened?

In this Interview with Ryan from IELTSCast.com, he shares exactly how he did it!

Firstly he read a lot, newspapers, books, and websites like the B B C, then once he was comfortable he started with the practise exams.

These are the books he used.
IELTS Practise test plus Longman (Considered more difficult than normal!)
IELTS Cambridge Reading test

…50 Practise tests later…

In total he did 50 reading tests, Ryan also recommends this amount, because this way you are completely familiar with the exam, so there shouldn’t be any surprises.

Use Different Strategies

Vinh was really smart because he practised the reading exam using different methods / strategies and found which worked best for him.

When he skimmed and scanned the maximum he scored was 7 but when he focussed on reading the whole text first, then answering the questions, his score improved.

So we have two strategies read the text then the questions, or first read the questions then then the text.

The important thing is to experiment with strategies and find what works for you.

New Vocabulary?

Vinh explained that he started by writing down a list of at least 10 new words on a piece of paper then on the reverse wrote their definitions in English. The list would then accompany him everywhere until it was learnt, after this he would progress to writing contextual sentences with the words.

Now, to learn new words he tries to form new sentences with any new vocabulary he sees.

Listening is a long term process.

Vinh advised to take a long term approach, start watching the news and even films, then force yourself to remove the subtitles, and concentrate.

Doing the Speaking exam with a cold British woman?

Vinh said the examiner was British, quite cold but very professional.
On the cue card he had to describe the street where he lived, to do this effectively he used examples, and followed this structure: WHAT? WHY? WHEN? Possibly followed by a personal example.
This enabled him to give solid, full and interesting answers, having a structure to follow would have installed a little confidence.
Online resources

Vinh recommended two websites, IELTS-Simon.com, and IELTS.com

Writing

Vinh found that overly complicated sentences are not necessary, so keep it simple and aim for clear communication and expressing an argument.

It took him two months, writing every day and eventually he reached his high score.

The Key thing students should do!

Organise your time, not just in the exam, set long term goals, start your listening practise today and acknowledge it is not going to happen overnight.

Don’t make these mistakes when applying to a foreign University

Don’t make these mistakes when applying to a foreign University

Why is there a picture of a band in an IELTS blog post?
Have listen to find out.

The crazy mistakes students make in an interview with the visa officer.
What you need to know when applying to a foreign university.

What to do if you don’t get the IELTS score requested by your university?

What to know about overseas consultancies.

Tom from the earlier episodes, shares some amazing insights from his experience as a consultant for students wanting to study overseas.

What to know about overseas consultancies.

Just be careful, they are operating on commisions, so what maybe their best choice may not correspond for you personally. Secondly Tom explains that a lot of the process can be completed online nowadays anyway.

What to do if you don’t get the IELTS score requested by your university?

Tom also advises that you should apply to the university EVEN IF you didn’t get the grade requested. Why?
American and English Universities are in countries suffering recessions, so international students are definitely welcome.
And what happens if they say no? Nothing, so you have nothing to loose.

What you need to know when applying to a foreign university.

He recommends applying for the university regardless of whether the university asks for TOEFL or IELTS. This makes sense because at the end of the day both qualifications are broadly testing the same components.

What happens in an interview with the visa officer?

For the interview it is good to be very familiar about who you know in the foreign country nd what you plan to do there, how you will support yourself. If your parents are supporting you, find out some simple information about them just in case, find out how much they earn, their job position etc.

The IELTS teacher got it wrong!

The IELTS teacher got it wrong!

Meet Tom Giglione, an experienced tutor with a very different view.

In this episode you will learn:
How you can use idiomatic language straight away!
Why the examiners ask you weird questions?#!
Why perfect is impossible in the IELTS (that is why it only goes up to nine, and not ten).

and then have a listen to Toms great tips including:

  • Why you should approach the IELTS as a skill.
  • Why the speaking and writing test are also reading tests.
  • Why practise doesn’t always lead to perfection.
  • The advantages of reading your work aloud back to yourself, after writing.
  • Tom has great advice for the speaking.
  • On the interview he shares:
  • Why it isn’t necessary to know about the topic.
  • Where the examiner is really focussing.
  • And a great strategy on how to make a comment about the question…STRAIGHT AWAY.
  • Also find out why they ask such crazy questions!!!

Use Technology

Start a blog, write in it everyday (new words, events etc).
Also try changing habits such as reading in English, watching Ted Talks, communicating (native speaker not necessary).
Use Audacity to record your voice daily.
To get idiomatic language, go and search for: ‘The Teacher idioms’ and get used to using this kind of language.

Tom on the Writing part

Tom recommends counting your words, timing yourself, and at 35 minutes stop writing and review.
Check for articles and plurals (common mistakes).
Also remember:
More writing = more opportunity for mistakes.
Get used to writing 10-12 words a line (easier to count).
One final thought…. please make your own writing legible:)

Carl Gene: Examiners are sick of formulaic, memorized sentences.

Carl Gene: Examiners are sick of formulaic, memorized sentences.

Carl Gene: Examiners are sick of formulaic, memorized sentences, it’s time to get an opinion.

Weak grammar will cost you points in 75% of the writing sections.

Carl is a genius! He speaks fluent Chinese, he’s a fully booked IELTS Tutor, AND he still has time to study for the advanced interpreting exams. Thankfully he had time for a great interview where covered loads of material.

Writing
Are you translating directly from your native language into English?

Absorb as much as possible of authentic native material.

Carl explains that for Chinese students he tends to focus on the grammar side because this effects the C&C, and task response.

Weak grammar will cost you points in 75% of the writing sections.

Also a sound grammar base in your own language is essential to start studying English grammar.

Do you read the question fully? Scrutinize it!

Make sure you read EVERY part of the question, does it ask you your opinion? To what extent do agree or disagree?…..Under what conditions do you agree / disagree?

He shared how examiners are sick of formulaic, memorized sentences, inauthentic essays with very abstract ideas and little opinion.

Giving a direct opinion versus academic writing?

In contrast he states be direct have a strong opinion, give a fresh two sentence introduction;
THIS IS MY OPINION AND STATE WHY….

Then give examples the examiner could relate to, write in a persuasive way, be direct and strong.

Natural Improvement?

To improve a students Band score to a 7, he focusses on the grammar and task response, empowering students with accurate grammar will improve the other areas…naturally.

READABILITY, does the examiner stress themselves reading the essay?

To improve readability use collocations and structures picked up through reading and listening authentic material.

Academic Writing vs. Your Opinion???

Don’t worry about being academic, they want a position, they want you to maintain that position, be direct and express yourself.

Long vs. Short sentences? Use a range, a topic sentence then an imperative sentence. An imperative sentence will show your grammatical knowledge, it may look like this:

Consider poverty, crime and food shortages, which are amongst the chief factors negatively affecting the quality of life in Brazil….

This is a powerful structure with persuasive speech and a good style.

Improve your pronunciation -stop making the same mistakes.

Carl explains a fantastic method which prevents future pronunciation mistakes.

With his students he goes through all the unique sounds in English, identifies the problems and works on those specific sounds with the students.
Pronounce all these sounds not just the way you think they are pronounced, the way they actually are.
Then he concentrates on speech focussing on intonation, rhythm, and emphasis to push the student to a higher level.

Training will get you there quicker, but determination and active listening are essential.

Carl recommends reading THE WEEK, which have lots of small paragraphs with authentic material not text books.

Also you need to be curious about the material not just simply engage it.

Your style of writing?

We then have a chat about Carl’s new book which covers the features of good style when writing;
-Keeping word repetition to a minimum.
-Avoiding redundant sentences.

The book also covers the kind of structures used and then has a grammatical section covering common mistakes Chinese students make (Articles etc.).

This is a fantastic podcast, and definitely worth a listen if you are Chinese or not!

Higher score or your money back, things don’t get much fairer than that.
(However you do have to be prepared to put the hours in!).

On this recording Nigel explains, learner centred learning covering how different students have different learning
strategies.

Support

We explore the value of support when studying and how the course offers this alongside tuition and personal attention.
Nigel tells us about IELTSAmigo an exciting new project were students can meet and find expert advice and have a chat with the teacher.

We cover ways of practising the Speaking section without a native English speaker.
All though it isn’t ideal, the important thing is practising and getting confidence.

Speaking

For the speaking Nigel explained the best approach is really understanding the exam, the three parts.
For part one: Think about your answers, make them interesting.
For the second part, don’t get carried away, remember the sub questions.
For the third part -IF absolutely necessary- you can lie, at the end of the day it’s a test of fluency and accuracy not truth.

Common Errors

I also asked which are the most common errors students make on the IELTS?
And then we discuss which is the best way to approach the writing section? Nigel recommends 50-60% of the time should be spent on planning, choosing the verbs, the argument, the vocabulary etc.

‘If you plan, you come up with a much better answer ….and then of course do the checking’.

Courses also specialised for nurses and the medical professions, so those taking IELTS to work as a nurse – check this out!

Patrick from IELTSTestOnline.com – Powerful learning for time poor students.

Patrick from IELTSTestOnline.com – Powerful learning for time poor students.

Meet Patrick, A Wrexham FC Football fan, and also owner of the effective online IELTS preparation site.
This podcast is ideal for students who are working full time, who don’t have the time to travel to an academy, but still need to study.
On the Podcast Patrick explains how you can make 3 hours of study more effective than 8 hours
How is this?

You start with an online practise test, identify your errors, then focus on these areas with a knowledgeable guide, remarkably simple.
The philosophy is focussing on what you need, instead of dedicating hours to general revision.
Patrick explains the concept of learner centred learning, – a highly effective method for ‘time poor’ students, this includes getting instant feedback from your work – not having to wait for the answers.

We talk about what the videos on the course cover: what the test actually wants you to do. For example we discus the two different methods of paragraphing, the real world and the IELTS world.
Then we look at real world reading versus IELTS style reading (3000 words in an hour???), and the skills needed to conquer it.

Why television is not the best medium, while repetition definitely is, learning to get the flow of the language.
Here are some of the questions I asked:
What course video should every student be watching?
What is your best advice for the speaking section?
If you want free expert advice, or are considering an IELTS course, don’t do anything without listening to this first.

No matter what’s happening, you’re on this page looking for advice to score higher, and here you will find it.
Bronwyn was an IELTS examiner, has learnt over 3 foreign languages and taught IELTS for over 20 years.
If you want higher band scores it’s fundamental to avoid the errors that Bronwyn saw during her time as an examiner.
Common mistakes that are insanely simple to solve.
Not only are the common mistakes simple to solve, there is also a universal skill to be mastered and utilised in each section, speaking, reading, writing and listening.
The skill is actually quite logical, once you know.
What I found interesting was that your spelling can effect your score in the LISTENING.
Bronwyn also shared some expert pronunciation advice especially with the vowel sounds.
Does your culture effect your ability?
I also asked if your culture could affect the way you learn English, and the answer was a resounding YES. So find out your weak spot and start working!
And again we hear that phrase ‘learn through your ears‘, you should train your ears to adapt, put 60% of your life in English, this way you progress a lot faster.
This method educates your brain to decode ‘sounds’ into language.
We also cover the two different stages of learning; reviewing and building, applying these two steps makes learning much more effective.
Dictagloss?
Then we share a method you can use at home, it’s called dictogloss and it improves your writing by getting rid of those tiny mistakes.
