The book deals with the problem of bearing capacity and the fracture of thermally loaded bodies. The treatise is based on extensive experimental and technological data from materials development processes for high-temperature nuclear reactors and aerospace nuclear-rocket engines. Theoretical principles of crack interaction kinetics in non-uniform stress fields and rearrangement of stresses in thermally loaded finite bodies are treated. Electron-beam, induction and ion beam techniques are applied to measure thermal stress resistance. The main regularities of fracture at various modes of local, combined and cyclic thermal loading in a wide temperature range are considered. A new approach to estimate the crack pattern and the bearing capacity of bodies in inhomogeneous fields of thermal and residual stresses is developed on the basis of fracture mechanics. The method can be used to study the fracture behaviour of a surface at local heating and applied strain. The crucial factors influencing thermal shock fracture of fissured and functionally graded materials are indicated. Changes in the thermal stress resistance of carbides (ZrC, NbC, and SiC), graphite containing materials, Si3N4, Y2O3, Sc2O3 Al2O3 and sapphire single crystals, composites and their structural parameters can be studied with this method. The book provides up-to-date information on the physical–mechanical properties of refractory compounds and practical recommendations on possible technological improvements of their thermal-stress resistance

Aerodynamics is the theoretical foundation of aeronautical, rocket, space, and artillery engineering and the cornerstone of the aerodynamic design of modern craft. The present textbook, in addition to the general laws of flow of a fluid, treats the application of aerodynamics, chiefly in rocketry and modern hig speed aviation. The book consists of two parts, each forming a separate volume. ?he first of them concerns the fundamental concepts and definitions or' aerodynamics and the theory of flow over an airfoil and a wing, including an unsteady flow (Chapters 1-9), while the second describes the aerodynamic design of craft and their individual parts (Chapters 10-15). The two parts are designed for use in a two-semester course of aerodynamics, although the first part can be used idependently by those interested in individual problems of theoretical aerodynamics.

A sound theoretical background is important to the study of any subject because creative solutions of practical problems, scientific research, and discoveries are impossible without it. Students should therefore devote special attention to the first live chapters, which deal with the fundamental concepts and definitions of aerodynamics, the kinematics of a fluid, the fundamentals of l]uid dynamics, the theory of shocks, and the method of characteristics used widely in investigating supersonic flows. Chapters 6 and 7, which relate to the tlow over airfoils, are also important to a fundamental understaIding of the subject. These chapters contain a fairly complete discussion of the general theory of flow of a gas in two-dimensional space (the theory of two-dimensional flow). The information on the supersonic steady flow over a wing in Chapter 8 relates directly to these materials. The aerodynamic design of most modern craft is based on studies of such flow.

The efficiency of cutting tools employed in engineering and other crafts depends very largely on their correct heat treatment. The use of carbon steels is still predominant and, although the methods of hardening and tempering such tools is relatively simple and straightforward, there are many users of these tools who run into difficulties when attempting to harden and temper them. In the past, the methods employed in these processes have often been governed mainly by rule of thumb, and experienced tool makers have often evolved individual methods which have been in some cases closely guarded as trade secrets. Reliable practical information on the subject has been difficult to obtain. There is, however, no reason why even the novice should not be able to harden and temper tools quite successfully by adopting simple methods which can be applied without the need for elaborate equipment. Since the original edition of this book by George Gentry was published over 30 years ago, several later editions have included information on current trends in tool technique and metallurgy to keep it fully up to date with modern practice, while still concentrating on basic requirements of the small Workshop. In the present edition the chapter on case-hardening has been completely re-written, with more fully detailed description of the latest processes, materials and equipment; also new information on gas hardening, nitriding and flame hardening. Other additions include reference to methods of measuring hardness, and details of gas and electric furnaces of a type suited to the small workshop, technical school, laboratory or factory.

Fermi writes with clarity, always carefully laying the appropriate groundwork for each topic.
The mathematics assumes familiarity with calculus, including partial differentiation. Fermi provides clear explanations and motivation for the mathematics and the derivations are complete and easy to follow. For example, he carefully explained the form of a perfect differential of two variables and how it can be more readily integrated. I appreciated this help.

The first four chapters will be familiar to students of physics: Thermodynamic Systems, First Law of Thermodynamics, Second Law of Thermodynamics, and Entropy. The derivation of the Clapeyron equation and the Van der Waals equation may be new to some students.

Thereafter, the text begins to look more like physical chemistry with chapters titled Thermodynamic Potentials, Gaseous Reactions, Thermodynamics of Dilute Solutions, and the Entropy Constant. I found these last chapters to be more difficult, but not overly so.

At some points Thermodynamics becomes a real page-turner, but not in the sense of a fast-paced action story. The page-turning is necessary to retrieve earlier mathematical expressions. Occasionally, you will encounter statements like "the expression for the free energy is immediately obtained from equations (111), (29), and (86)." Fermi does not allow the reader to forget earlier derivations and discussions.
