John M. Bryan, Richard Cheek
size: 96.14 MB
Number Of Pages: 240
Publication Date: 2005-04-07

http://ifile.it/jodtil/ebooksclub.o...tecture_of_Mount_Desert.l_59x36800jx90x89.pdf

Product Description: Mount Desert has been one of America's favorite tourist destinations for over 150 years. As early as the 1840s, the lush landscape of this island on the Maine coast attracted artists and writers, who soon made Mount Desert's beauty famous with their paintings and publications. The stream of tourists that began traveling to the island after the Civil War prompted a building boom of cottages, hotels, and various buildings in Bar Harbor and other towns in the vicinity. Fred Savage (1861–1924) was the most influential architect in the development of Mount Desert and northeastern Maine, designing over three hundred buildings. Richly illustrated with archival drawings, photographs, and newly commissioned color photography, Maine Cottages presents all of Savage's most important works while placing the life and career of this architect in the larger context ofMount Desert.

Architectural Excursions: Frank Lloyd Wright, Holland and Europe (Contributions to the Study of Art and Architecture)

by:
Donald L. Johnson, Donald Langmead
size: 19.47 MB
Number Of Pages: 272
Publication Date: 2000-08-30

http://ifile.it/hu4bdg/ebooksclub.o...f_Art_and_Architecture_.l_59x36800jx90x89.pdf

Product Description Soon after 1900 in both North America and Europe the evolution from the tradition of Mediterranean and Gallic architectural styles to modernism began. This phenomenon was due, in part, to American industrial architecture and the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright's building and architectural treatises of 1898-1908, with the additional help of Dutch propaganda on his behalf, significantly influenced European practitioners and theorists. European architecture within and outside of Holland reflects an adaptation of Wright's theories along with the structural determinism of American industrial buildings. With new evidence and fresh analysis culled from Dutch and American archives, personal correspondence, and professional material, this study examines the weight of Wright's works and words and those of the Dutchmen H.P. Berlage, Theo van Doesburg, Jan Wils, J.J.P. Oud, William Dudok and Hendrik Theodor Wijdeveld. This work provides insight into the effects of Wright's architectural theories and designs, coupled with an extensive guide for further research. It aims to attract art and architecture scholars and historians from both sides of the Atlantic and should also be of interest to social historians, artists and architects. Events and theories, including the assertion that Hendrik Theodor Wijdeveld was the catalytic source behind Wright's Taliesin Fellowship established in 1932, are presented in clear accessible language. Tied to the text are numerous visual presentations of significant designs and buildings.
About the Author Donald Langmead is Professor of Architectural History at the University of South Australia. Donald Leslie Johnson is an American scholar who studied in the masters class of Louis Kahn.

Product Description:
Architecture for the Poor describes Hassan Fathy's plan for building the village of New Gourna, near Luxor, Egypt, without the use of more modern and expensive materials such as steel and concrete. Using mud bricks, the native technique that Fathy learned in Nubia, and such traditional Egyptian architectural designs as enclosed courtyards and vaulted roofing, Fathy worked with the villagers to tailor his designs to their needs. He taught them how to work with the bricks, supervised the erection of the buildings, and encouraged the revival of such ancient crafts as claustra (lattice designs in the mudwork) to adorn the buildings.

Eskimo Architecture: Dwelling and Structure in the Early Historic Period

by:
Molly Lee, Gregory A. Reinhardt, Andrew Tooyak Jr
size: 7.73 MB
Number Of Pages: 216
Publication Date: 2003-05-01

http://ifile.it/viqcbo/ebooksclub.o...e_Early_Historic_Period.l_59x36800jx90x89.pdf

Book Description:
The architecture of Eskimo peoples represents a diversified and successful means of coping with one of the most severe climates humankind can inhabit. The popular image of the igloo is but one of the many structures examined by experts Lee and Reinhardt in the first book-length and arctic-wide study of this remarkable subject.
Lavishly illustrated with historic and contemporary photographs, drawings, and maps, this volume includes a comprehensive survey of the historical literature on Eskimo architecture around the circumpolar north. Lee and Reinhardt then draw an extended comparative analysis of the geographical, climatic, and ethnographic aspects of an impressive breadth of material from four Arctic subregions: Greenland; the Central Arctic; the Northwest Arctic and Bering Strait; and Southwest Alaska, the Bering Sea, Siberia, and the Gulf of Alaska. In an innovative consideration of both material and cultural aspects of dwelling, they and the peoples they describe redefine the very meaning of "architecture."
While scholars of the circumpolar north will welcome the meticulous research of this benchmark study, its clear and fluent prose and abundant illustrations make Eskimo Architecture an engrossing read for nonspecialists interested in the incredible dwellings of arctic indigenous peoples.

Publication Date: 2003-04-04

http://ifile.it/b0meiy/ebooksclub.o..._the_American_Landscape.l_59x36800jx90x89.pdf

Product Description:
The word "nature" comes from natura, Latin for birth - as do the words nation, native and innate. But nature and nation share more than a common root, they share a common history where one term has been used to define the other. In the United States, the relationship between nation and nature has been central to its colonial and post-colonial history, from the idea of the noble savage to the myth of the frontier. Narrated, painted and filmed, American landscapes have been central to the construction of a national identity. This book offers an in-depth look at how changing ideas of what nature is and what it means for the country have been represented in buildings and landscapes over the past century.

Surrealism and Architecture

by:
Thomas Mical
size: 25.84 MB
type: .pdf
language: en [ english ]
Number Of Pages: 352
Publication Date: 2004-12-17

http://ifile.it/ml0ewc/ebooksclub.org__Surrealism_and_Architecture.l_59x36800jx90x89.pdf

Product Description:
Surrealism and Architecture examines a long overlooked topic: the relationship of surrealist thought to architectural theory and practice. This is a historically informed examination of architecture's perceived absence in surrealist thought, surrealist tendencies in the theories and projects of modern architecture and the place of surrealist thought in contemporary design methods and theories.

This book represents the most current insights into the historical and contemporary relationships of surrealism in the thought and practice of modern architecture. Of all the artistic modernism affecting the design of buildings and cities, only surrealism has remained unexplored, yet the surrealist critiques of rationalism, orthodoxy, and the spatial production of meaning have a place in the history of modernism. In the 20 essays, the role of the subconscious, the techniques of defamiliarization, aesthetic and social forces affecting the objects, interiors, cities and landscapes of the 20th century arerevealed in the works of Breton, Dali, Aragon, Le Corbusier, Neimeyer, Kiefer, Hejduk, Tschumi, and others ranging across the history of modern art and architecture. The book contains a diversity of voices, methodologies, and insights to bring into sharp focus what is often suppressed in the histories of the modernist avant-garde. This comprehensive collection examines the theoretical, visual, and spatial practices of writers, artists, architects, and urbanists with particular emphasis on the critique of the everyday world-view, offering alternative models of subjectivity, artistic effect, and the production of meanings in the built world.

With the renewed interest in the surrealist movement, this timely collection of illustrated essays is the first to look at the architectural possibilities of this distinct modern artistic movement which was interdisciplinary and international. This book offers a model for a new approach to historically rigorous analysis of interdisciplinary artistic practice. It will be of interest to scholars in the histories of modernism, students and practitioners of art and architecture, cultural studies, and urban studies.
