Merriam-Webster's commitment to innovation and scholarship began with the publication of its first dictionary in 1847 and continued with the 1859 publication of a revised and enlarged edition. [The 1859 edition was the first American dictionary to include pictorial illustrations; it also featured a supplement of new words and explanations of the distinctions among synonyms, all improvements that made the dictionary more useful than ever before.]
Dictionary making at Merriam-Webster has always been an ongoing process. Even as the 1859 edition was being published, editorial work on a completely new edition was under way.
In 1864, under the editorship of Noah Porter, An American Dictionary of the English Language, Royal Quarto Edition, Unabridged, appeared, featuring a vocabulary three times that of Noah Webster's original 1828 edition. Webster's Unabridged, as the 1864 edition was called informally, soon increased the company's prestige even further. Governments, publishers, schools, and even the Supreme Court of the United States followed Webster's.
A revision of Webster's Unabridged containing a biographical dictionary was published in 1878, and another edition, this one with a dictionary of place names, appeared in 1884.
Editorial work for Merriam-Webster had always been performed by distinguished scholars, and by the 1870s a small, permanent staff had been established. The Merriam brothers believed that retaining such a staff would ensure that the voice and style of Merriam-Webster dictionaries would have continuity and consistency. That belief still drives the company, which boasts the largest group of working lexicographers in North America.
The 1890s saw the introduction of two classic trademarked Merriam-Webster dictionary series, works that still form the foundation of the company's product line: the International and the Collegiate.
The Merriams recognized that English was used worldwide and that Merriam-Webster references could serve people all over the globe. To reflect this global outlook, Webster's Unabridged was officially renamed Webster's International Dictionary, Unabridged, with the publication of the 1890 edition. That impressive new volume contained 175,000 entries - 56,000 more than the 1864 edition - and covered a vocabulary that reflected the accelerating pace of change in society at the end of the nineteenth century.
Webster's International Dictionary was an enormous achievement - and a big, heavy book. The company recognized that there were times when such a large volume was impractical, so in 1898 it introduced Webster's Collegiate Dictionary as a compact and convenient reference intended to meet the needs of the general reader and especially the college student.
Since they were first released, Webster's International Dictionary and Webster's Collegiate Dictionary have been updated and revised many times. New editions of the unabridged appeared in 1909 (Webster's New International Dictionary), 1934 (Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition), and 1961 (Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged). Addenda sections, featuring words that came into use after publication of the 1961 edition, have been added regularly, most recently in 1993.

Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable - sometimes referred to simply as Brewer's - is a reference work containing definitions and explanations of many famous phrases, allusions and figures, whether historical or mythical. Originally published in 1870 by the Reverend E. Cobham Brewer, it was aimed at the growing number of people who did not have a university education, but wanted to understand the origins of phrases and historical or literary allusions. The 'phrase' part of the title refers mainly to the explanation of various idioms and proverbs, while the 'fable' part might more accurately be labelled 'folklore' and ranges from classical mythology to relatively recent literature. On top of this, Brewer added notes on important historical figures and events, and other things which he thought would be of interest, such as Roman numerals. Although intended as a comprehensive reference work, early editions of Brewer's are highly idiosyncratic, with certain editorial decisions highly suggestive of the author's personal bias. For instance, a list under the entry for John purported to show the bad luck associated with that name, ending "Certainly a disastrous list of Popes" despite several being described merely as "nonentities." Some entries seem so trivial as to be hardly worth including, and others are almost definitely apocryphal. Despite this inconsistency, however, the book was a huge success, providing information often not included in more traditional dictionaries and encyclopedias. A revised and updated edition was published in 1896, shortly before Brewer died.

The materials of this work were originally collated in Japan to assist my students in their English studies, and a Japanese edition of the Dictionary appeared in the year 1888. The phrases that recur so often in English books and in conversation, conveying a meaning to the native English ear which a rational dissection of their component parts quite fails to supply, had not previously been collected in a handy volume. An excellent work, it is true, by a Chinaman, Kwong's Dictionary of English Phrases, came out about ten years ago. The author received in its compilation valuable help from eminent American scholars, and its definitions and examples are excellent. The objections to the work are, first, that British, as distinguished from American phrases, are conspicuous by their absence; secondly, that the arrangement is arbitrary and confusing; thirdly, that the examples, though apt and good in themselves, do not bear the very useful imprimatur of some well-known author's name. They are made for the occasion, instead of having been picked up in reading. A fourth objection to the work is, that it is largely made up of definitions of single words. Til the present volume, instead of attempting to divide the work into chapters treating of "colloquial phrases", "cant phrases", "slang phrases," and so forth, I have thrown the whole into alphabetical form, and have marked by letters the category to which, in my opinion, the phrases ought to belong. This classification may be studied or may be neglected as suits the convenience or the taste of the consulter. I fear its distinctions may not please every one, and that the classification must be looked upon merely as an approach to an ideal 'division, which, even in more capable hands, would not be regarded as final. The division I have chosen is fourfold, and in a descending scale of dignity: Prose, Conversational, Familiar, Slang. By Prose (P) phrases, I understand such phrases as Macaulay or Matthew Arnold might use in their serious writings. Conversational (C) phrases, again, are suitable for use in social intercourse, at gatherings where strangers are present, and where we weigh our words before uttering them. Familiar (F) phrases are less dignified, and are only in place where we are speaking unreservedly among intimates. The lowest category of all is that of Slang (S) phrases, which are generally of a local or technical nature-that is, they are fully understood only by those of a certain locality, coterie, or profession. Such is the language of the forecastle, of the school-ground, or of the mine. This Dictionary does not pretend to exhaust the list of slang phrases, but only to give those which have crept into ordinary use, and are understood, although they may not be used, by all educated people. At least eighty per cent, of the phrases are freshly gathered.

This book is meant to help every user of the English language to achieve a clear, uncluttered style. It carries two complementary appeals, one negative and one positive: do not encumber the natural grace of English with the uninspired expressions that encrust the speech and writing of the lazy and the ignorant; and try to make every sentence a fresh arrangement of words, free of faddish whimsy, mannerisms, inexact or worn-out metaphors, and the overworked locutions known as cliches.
Besides originality, good style requires clarity and economy. With these goals in mind, I urge the reader to avoid common offenses against logic or propriety (for example, between each), to recognize the windiness of circumlocution and learn how to deflate it (for example, by simplifying on a daily basis to daily or every day), to banish upstart words with twisted senses that destroy exactness (as in troop levels for troop strength), and even to question the sanctity of certain idioms (by and large is one, a relic from the days of sailing ships) that have become detached from their first meanings and make poor sense today.
Jargon, pedantry, pretentiousness, purism, vulgarity-these, too, are treated as spoilers of the language when they obtrude in the text. Nevertheless, this is not a book of technicalities or scholarly precepts. The reader is not forbidden to use a preposition to end a sentence with, or to ever split an infinitive. My chief purpose is to encourage an inventive choice of words to suit each thought as exactly as possible, and this has led me to assemble hundreds of hackneyed expressions-those stale, too familiar combinations or words that hamper the vitality of English like bad habits.
These cliches do not include, except incidentally, our teeming heritage of proverbs,which are commonplaces of folk wisdom too homely to compete with firsthand wording, nor our store of dull aphorisms and platitudes (such as Familiarity breeds contempt), many of which have bored mankind since the time of Aesop, nor the often tiresome parrotings from literature-a vast source of stock phrases, especially from the Bible (e.g., by the skin of one's teeth, taken from the Book of Job) and Shakespeare (e.g., to gild the lily, misquoted from King John).
Slang has also been excluded, but less firmly-excluded because most of its amusing indiscretions turn obsolete before they can be printed, yet selectively included because, once they have gained some popular acceptance, they resemble all other cliches in triteness, their vivacity and brashness lost through repetition: the joke about needing something like a hole in the head ceased to be funny at least two decades ago, and now only a dreary inelegance is left in the phrase.
Despite these exclusions, the reader will find here what I believe to be the greatest number of cliches ever to appear in one volume. Many others still infest the language indeed, no single compilation can record them all-but enough examples are provided in these entries to support this valid warning: the more of them a writer or a speaker uses, the more his prose will lack originality and interest.
If any of my choices and interpretations should be assailed as arbitrary, I must answer that perhaps they are. Certainly some cliches are more stultified than others, and it is the reader's right to evaluate each instance on his private scale of sensibility. I will also admit that there are authorities on English who have kind words for the cliche, calling it by such endearments as "set phrase" and "literary convenience" and defending it as a short cut to quick understanding. I will admit further that every cliche condemned here can be used, and is used at times, by cultivated persons, especially in casual speech or for some deliberate effect. No language can be purged of stereotyped expressions-the title of this book proves that-but an effort to avoid them should be made by everyone who values literate discourse.

Theodore Roosevelt and a rooster share another margin, while a third page offers Isak Dinesen, a dingo, and dinoflagellate. It is a fascinating book to peruse, and a compellingly scholarly addition to the American Heritage Dictionary line.

The latest edition of the American Heritage Dictionary is out, and that's hot news--not just for the resolute followers of lexicographical minutiae, but for the general reading and writing public as well. Why? Because the American Heritage is a long-standing favorite family dictionary (never underestimate the value of pictures) and one of the prime dictionary references for magazines, newspapers, and dot.com content providers.
